Jannik Sinner v Hugo Gaston Head to Head

These two have played each other once before this and that match came as recently as the Marseille Open earlier this month. Sinner came away a 6-4, 6-1 winner over Gaston in that second round encounter.

Sinner Coming off Back to Back Quarterfinals

Playing in the Miami Open for the first time ever, Sinner got a first round bye as a seeded player and now takes on an opponent ranked about 130 places behind him for a place in the third round. And he starts off with the confidence of having reached successive quarterfinals in the last two tournaments he has played this season.

It started with the Marseille Open where he got to the quarterfinal with a couple of wins including one against Gaston himself.

And Sinner then moved to Dubai where he needed three sets against both, Alexander Bublik and Roberto Bautista-Agut to get himself a place in the last eight before he lost to Aslan Karatsev.

Earlier in the season, Sinner had kick-started the year with his second ATP title, as he went on to lift the trophy at the Great Ocean Road Open in the lead-up to the Australian Open.

Unfortunately for him, as an unseeded player he was drawn to take on Denis Shapovalov in the very first round but he did well to push his Canadian opponent to five sets before going down.

He will now look to push past Gaston to set up a possible meeting with Karen Khachanov.

Wildcard Gaston Gets Past Kopefer

Gaston shot to fame when he reached the fourth round of the French Open last year, having never won even a qualifying match at a Grand Slam before that.

He finished the year with a second round appearance at the Hamburg Challenger and then losing to Pablo Carreno Busta in the opener at the Paris Masters.

This season began with his inability to qualify for the main draw of the Australian Open, which was followed by back to back opening round losses at the two Challenger competitions in Quimper. Gaston then made it to the semifinal in Cherbourg but it was at Marseille he finally won his first main draw match on the ATP circuit with a three-set win over Dennis Novak.

And now starting out at 2/1 against Dominik Kopefer in the first round of this tournament, Gaston shocked the German 6-1, 6-4 to set up a meeting with another youngster Sinner. A tough initiation can be expected but one that would teach the Frenchman something for the future.

Sinner v Gaston Prediction and Tip

No surprises that Sinner is 1/6 to win this and 1/2 to do that in straight sets. Backing the talented Italian to do that and move to round three.

Tip: Sinner to win in straight sets: 1/2 (bet365)
