Dušan Lajović v Ernesto Escobedo Head to Head

There have been no previous meetings between Lajovic and Escobedo before this second round encounter at the Miami Masters.

As a world number 26, you are expected to do a lot better than win just five of the 12 matches you have played in the season.

Unfortunately for Lajovic, the start to this season has been quite underwhelming for him and he would be looking at this Miami Masters to turn things around as he first looks to emulate his best ever performance at this tournament and then overtake it. He had made it to the third round of the competition last time, in 2019, and repeated the same in 2014 as well.

Lajovic, who started off the season with back to back losses at the ATP Cup, then looked to have turned things around with a solid showing at the Australian Open where he reached the fourth round. This included a second round victory over the favourite Alexander Bublik but other than that showing in the season’s first Grand Slam, it’s not been all hunky-dory.

At Montpellier, Lajovic lost in the first round to Dennis Novak, and at Doha he suffered a similar opening defeat at the hands of Marton Fucsovics. Add that to the two second round losses in Rotterdam and Dubai and he’s probably staring at a desperate need to win a few matches in a row to get back to his usual best.

Escobedo Finally Wins Main Draw Match

It’s been a while since Escobedo won a match in the main draw of a tournament, having last done that across all levels of competition at the US Open last season. Between then and now, he had played in eight competitions across the ATP and Challenger circuits and while he did win a few of the qualifying rounds, the American hadn’t won a single main draw encounter.

Till the 2021 Miami Masters that is.

It took him back to back wins in the qualifiers to make it to  the main draw, defeating Maxime Cressy and Brandon Nakashima in the qualifying rounds. That was followed by a 6-3, 6-2 drubbing of Paolo Lorenzi, in a match which lasted an hour and a half.

The pair exchanged breaks of serves in the second and third games of the opening set but it was in the sixth game that Escobedo finally drilled home a decisive advantage with a break of serve.

The second set was an even more one-sided one with Escobedo crashing through Lorenzo’s defences with two breaks of serves which finished off the encounter with ease.

Can he test the out-of-form Lajovic in this second round encounter?

Lajović v Escobedo Prediction and Tip

Interestingly, there’s not much to choose between the two players according to the bookmakers with both starting out at 10/11. We think Lajovic’s experience could see him through in this one despite his form problems.

Tip: Lajovic to win: 10/11 (bet365)
