Bianca Andreescu v Maria Sakkari Head to Head

Andreescu Sees off Sorribes Tormo Challenge

In a match of wildly swinging fortunes, Andreescu was able to see off Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarterfinal, overcoming her in three sets. She won 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to the last four stage, needing two hours and 36 minutes to do that.

The first set saw Andreescu fall two breaks down but she came back to overturn one of them in the very next game after frittering away three break-points. The Canadian missed a break-point to get things back on serve next game but then broke Sorribes Tormo in the eighth and the 10th game to scalp the set.

Things took a strange turn in the second set where neither player managed to hold on to their serves for a long time. In fact, there were eight breaks of serves in nine games and the one game where the Spaniard did hold on to her serve, the eighth, proved to be the decisive one, forcing the match into the final set.

In the final set, Andreescu came away a much better player with three breaks of serve while her opponent did manage to pull one back but it was a case of too little, too late.

Andreesu, as a result of this win, now has now made it to her second semifinal of the season following on from the Phillip Island Trophy in February, but more importantly has shown great fighting capabilities all tournament by overcoming Tereza Martincova, Amanda Anisimova and Garbine Muguruza before this.

Sakkari Ends Osaka’s 23-Match Streak

The last time Naomi Osaka lost a match was at the 2020 Australian Open, nearly 15 months ago. So there was no doubting who the favourite was coming into this quarterfinal between Sakkari and Osaka, although we did reckon the Greek player would end up testing the world number two (but didn’t expect her to win!).

And definitely not this convincingly.

Sakkari crashed into Osaka’s 23-match winning party by routing her 6-0, 6-4 in only 69 minutes, smashing 22 winners to her opponent’s 23 unforced errors.

The world number 25 ran away with the first set with three breaks of serve but in the second fell 0-3 down, only to make a comeback and rattle off six of the next seven games to complete the win.

Sakkari, who has never gone beyond the fourth round of any Grand Slam, had also edged out the in-form Jessica Pegula in the previous round. She now faces her biggest challenge for her greatest reward – a win against Andreescu for a maiden finals berth in a WTA 1000 competition.

Andreescu v Sakkari Prediction and Tip

Andreescu is 1/2 to win this but there’s one factor that might go against her, and that’s the number of three-setters she has already played here – three in four days. Can she overcome exhaustion, if any, to get past the Greek number one?

Tip: Sakkari to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (bet365)
