Roberto Bautista Agut v Jannik Sinner Head to Head

Sinner won their only previous matchup in Dubai last month, edging past the Spaniard in the Round of 16 with a 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory.

Bautista Agut Knocks Out the Top Seed

Building on an impressive 2021 season, Roberto Bautista Agut stunned top seed Daniil Medvedev on Wednesday to enter the semifinal of the Miami Open for the first time in his career.

In what was a dominating performance, the 32-year-old Spaniard needed an hour and 32 minutes to dispatch the World No. 2, 6-4, 6-2.

Bautista Agut now has a 3-0 head-to-head lead against Medvedev, having dropped just one set last year in the Western and Southern Open.

In a stunning performance on Wednesday, the World No. 12 saved all three break points against the 25-year-old Russian, while breaking him thrice from seven break point opportunities to seal a fourth ATP 1000 semifinal spot.

The win improved Bautista Agut to 12-7 this year.

A nine-time winner on the tour, the Spaniard, who last won a title in Doha in 2019, has already featured in two finals this year, finishing runner-up to David Goffin in Montpellier and to Nikoloz Basilashvili in Doha.

The 2019 Wimbledon semifinalist had moved to the third round of the Miami Open without taking the court, as he received a first round bye and then was handed a walkover by South Africa’s Lloyd Harris.

Following the easy pass, the Spaniard was made to sweat in the next two rounds, having to comeback from a set down to beat Germany’s Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round and then needing to save a match point against 18th seed John Isner to reach his second Miami quarterfinal with a 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7) win.

Sinner Holds Off Bublik

Facing Bautista Agut in the semifinal, will be 19-year-old Jannik Sinner, who reached a maiden ATP 1000 semifinal with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win over Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik.

In a one-hour-and-41-minute contest Sinner was put under a lot of pressure by the power and guile of the 32nd seed Bublik, but the Italian stood up to the challenge, beating the Kazakh for the second time in the month, having defeated him earlier in the Round of 32 in Dubai.

Sinner is only the second Italian, after Fabio Fognini, to reach the final four in Miami. He is also the eighth teenager to make it this far in the tournament history.

Having begun the season by winning his second career title at the Grace Ocean Road Open, Sinner reached two more quarterfinals in Marseille and Dubai to head to Miami with a 9-4 record.

The 2020 French Open quarterfinalist began his Miami campaign with a 6-2, 6-2 win over France’s Hugo Gaston. He had to rally against 14th seed Karen Khachanov in the next round before winning the contest 4-6, 7-6 (7-2), 6-4. He had a relatively easier fourth round, as he knocked out Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori 6-3, 6-2.

On Friday, Sinner will aim to become the fourth teenager to reach the finals in Miami. Andre Agassi and Novak Djokovic won the titles at the age of 19 while Rafael Nadal finished runner-up as an 18-year-old.

Bautista Agut v Sinner Prediction and Tip

Expect another thriller between the two, with the match going the distance. It will be interesting to see though if Bautista Agut can avenge his Dubai defeat and reach a third final this year.

Tip: Three sets in the match: 6/4 (bet365)
