Danka Kovinic v Viktorija Tomova Head to Head

The pair have played each other four times before, and Kovinic leads their head-to-head series by three matches to one.

Kovinic won their semi-final encounter at Budapest in 2017, and again on Hungarian soil in Szekesfehervar in 2019, those wins sandwiched by Tomova’s victory in the final of a junior event earlier that year.

All those marcher were on clay, but Kovinic’s last victory was on the hard courts of Shenzhen in the autumn of that year.

Kovinic, a Beaten Finalist in Charleston

Five years after her last final at the Istanbul Cup in 2016, the Montenegrin once again found herself with a chance of winning her first WTA title in Charleston on Sunday, only to fall at the final hurdle once more.

She was beaten by Veronika Kudermetova of Russia in straight sets, but she can still look back on her week’s work with a  great deal of satisfaction.

In the course of her progress to the final, she heat highly rated Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez and then overcame Petra Kvitova in straight sets. She went on to beat Yulia Putintseva and then defeated Ons Jabeur in the semi-finals.

More performances like that, and she can look forward to climbing the world rankings again.

Tomova Coming off the Bogota Semifinal

Whilst Kovinic was busy last week in Charleston, Tomova was having her own adventure in Bogota, where she got to the semi-finals before losing to Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia in straight sets.

Although that was disappointing, it was still an encouraging week’s work for a woman who spends most of her time on the junior circuits, and whose previous best result on the senior WTA tour in 2021 had been first round defeats in Dubai and St. Petersburg, and wo had failed to qualify for the Australia Open and Miami.

Now she wants to get to the stage where she her world ranking is sufficiently high that can start to get automatic invitations to tournaments without having to qualify first.

Kovinic v Tomova Prediction and Tip

Kovinic has already proved how adept she is on the courts of Charleston by reaching the final here last week and she will be hoping for another run deep into the tournament. She will start favourite to extend her winning run over Tomova.

Tip: Kovinic to win in straight sets: 5/6 (bet365)
