Astra Sharma v Yafan Wang Head to Head
The pair have met twice before. Sharma was forced to retire injured from the final of a junior event in 2013, and Wang beat her in the second round in Monterrey last year.

Since breaking into the top 100 in 2018, the same year she reached the second round of her home Grand Slam, Sharma has been sliding gradually down the rankings, although she has achieved some success in doubles – she was a beaten finalist in the Mixed event at the Australian Open in 2019, and recently claimed her second senior WTA title with partner Ellen Perez at the Mexican Open.
In fact, she enjoyed her time in Guadalajara because, having come through the qualifying route, she went on to reach the third round, beating the highly rated Canadian teenager Leylah Annie Fernandez in the process, before losing to Sara Sorribes Tormo of Spain.
Since then though she has suffered successive defeats in Miami qualifying and in Bogota.

Wang’s Terrible Form Continues to Make Things Tough
Since that victory over Sharma more than a year ago, the Chinese woman has been in terrible form, although she only played one more match in 2020, losing at the quarter-final stage in Mexico to the Czech Maria Bouzkova.
She began 2021 with seven successive defeats, and only twice in that run did she even manage to win a set.
Wang Yafan broke that sequence with a hard fought win in the first round over Emiliana Arango of Columbia, the 483rd in the world, but was quickly brought down to earth in her next match by Viktoriya Tomova, losing to the Bulgarian in straight sets.
The big question is whether she can show a turnaround and show signs of getting back to her best before the WTA rankings start to reflect the original system.
Sharma v Wang Prediction and Tip
Although Wang has beaten Sharma in the past, the Chinese woman is enduring a poor run of form right now and, despite being the higher ranked player, will start the underdog in this match.
