Fabio Fognini v Jordan Thompson Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Australian Open where Fognini had defeated Thompson in a tough five-setter to progress to the third round.

Fognini Tames Kecmanovic in Opener

The Italian has had a middling start to the season but the biggest surprise came in the opener at Marbella last week when Fognini fell in straight sets to Jaume Munar. That he managed to win just three games on his favourite surface would have stung hard and was one of the reasons why Miomi Kecmanovic, his first round opponent at the Monte-Carlo Masters would have given himself a chance.

Fognini, however, played a near-flawless first set to pocket it very easily and while he was stretched in the second, managed to complete a straight-set victory.

After starting out with the loss of the first service game, Fognini proceeded to break Kecmanovic three times in a row to race off to a 5-1 lead and while he dropped serve again, the Italian broke for the fourth time to take a one set lead.

In the second, Fognini was 2-0 up again, but then lost his serve twice to see Kecmanovic serve at 4-3. Three break-points followed, the third of which he followed to make it 4-4 before he got another opportunity to do that at 6-5 and converted the second match-point he got too.

The defending champion now faces a slightly easier second round test.

Thompson Edges Out Paire

We all know the Benoit Paire story by now. The Frenchman hasn’t been enjoying his tennis too much since the pandemic break and has slumped from one defeat to another all these months.

Which is why Thompson was starting out as a favourite on a surface he doesn’t like as much as he does hard court, and yet, the Aussie needed a third set tie-breaker to get past Paire.

Thompson was on court for three hours and six minutes in a match that went on for three sets and saw two tie-breakers before he won his opening round encounter. It was his first win on clay since he had beaten fellow Aussie John Millman in the first round of the Kitzbuhel Open last year.

Incidentally he won that in a third set tie-breaker too, before he fell to Miomir Kecmanovic in the second. This time around he faces a second round opponent who had defeated Kecmanovic in the opener!

Fognini v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Expect Fognini to come through easily in this one, with a straight-set win looking quite likely against the Aussie.

Tip: Fognini to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
