Rafael Nadal v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

There have been four previous meetings between Nadal and Delbonis before this and the Spaniard has won ever single time. Two of those meetings came on clay in 2013 and 2015 while their most recent meetings were on hard court surfaces of the Rio Olympics and the Australian Open.

11-Time Winner Nadal Begins on Clay

All that Nadal has played this season is the Australian Open and the world number three made it as far as the quarterfinal there. He had a chance to get Stefanos Tsitsipas in that competition but lost after taking a two-set lead.

Nadal’s fitness, a lingering back issue, has been at the centre of his woes. He has missed a few tournaments he would have loved to play in and as a result of that has fallen to number three on the world rankings.

He now returns to tennis at a venue where the Spaniard has won 11 titles, including one in 2018 when he defeated Kei Nishikori in the final. Interestingly, the last time this tournament was held, in 2019, Nadal was sent packing in the semifinal round by Fabio Fognini. He came back that season to win the title at the French Open and then made it a 13th tournament win at Roland-Garros the year after.

Can Nadal now get going in Monte-Carlo to kick-start his favourite tennis season of the year?

Delbonis 9-4 on Clay This Season

The fact that he is playing Nadal in this second round match shouldn’t take away from the fact Delbonis has shown some consistency on clay all season. Having played just two matches on hard court surfaces this year, the Argentine lost both but on clay this record is up to 7-4 in main draws and 9-4 overall.

This includes a solid, semifinal run at the Santiago Open where he fell to Facundo Bagnis.

Other than that, he has made it to the second round at three of the clay court tournaments he has featured in before this one at the Monte-Carlo Masters – the Cordoba Open, Buenos Aires Open and in Marbella.

At this competition, Delbonis is a qualifier and overcame Adrian Mannarino in straight sets to set up this meeting with Nadal in the second round. With his love for clay and the fact that Nadal is coming back after a while, Delbonis could fancy a shot at pushing the world number three a tad here.

Nadal v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

No surprises the level at which Nadal starts off a favourite, with bet365 offering 1/20 to win this but we believe we could see a bit of a fight in one of the sets that might push the match longer.

Tip: Over 18.5 games in the match: 6/5 (bet365)
