David Goffin v Marco Cecchinato Head to Head

In main draws of ATP competitions, Goffin and Cecchinato have faced off three times with Goffin leading 2-1. There was one other win for Goffin in the qualifiers of the 2014 Casablanca Open.

On clay, Goffin leads 2-1, with a win at the Italian Open in 2018 as well, while Cecchinato had defeated him at the 2019 French Open.

Goffin Stretched But Overcomes Cilic

It took him two hours and 13 minutes but Goffin managed to make it to the second round with a three-set win over Marin Cilic. It was a strange sort of a match, one of fluctuating fortunes that swung like a pendulum.

Cilic took an early 3-0 lead in the first set but Goffin then came back to break his opponent twice and clinch the set 6-4. In the second, it was the Belgian who broke first to go 2-1 up, but then strangely dropped his serve two more times to lose the set.

And then out of the blue, Goffin left Cilic with no answers in the final set. A longish second game on Cilic’s serve had four deuces followed by Goffin breaking him to go 2-0 ahead, and there was no looking back after that.

He broke Cilic two more times to complete a 6-4, 3-6, 6-0 victory.

Goffin, a semifinalist here in 2017, will now face a clay-court specialist who has dropped off a radar in recent times.

Cecchinato Puts One Past Koepfer

In a battle between two qualifiers, Cecchinato did not face a lot of trouble in getting past Dominik Koepfer in his opening round match. The Italian, once ranked 16th in the world, won 6-4, 6-3, having earlier defeated Marc-Andrea Huseler and Henri Laaksonen in the qualifiers of this competition.

Cecchinato’s season hasn’t gone the way he would have liked though.

In the seven tournaments he has played before this one at the Monte-Carlo Masters, the Italian player has won just two rounds – one at the Cordoba Open and the other at Cagliari last week. In the remaining five, Cecchinato failed to make it past his opener.

Which is why a couple of wins here in the qualifier and then a straight-set victory in an hour and 29 minutes against Koepfer would have given him some confidence going up against a player who isn’t quite a clay-courter.

Can he make it two in two for the first time this season?

Goffin v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip

That Goffin is a favourite isn’t much of a surprise but for him to start a mere 4/7 against a player struggling this badly is a pointer towards his own clay court form. Expecting Cecchinato to win a set here.

Tip: Cecchinato to win a set – Yes: 8/15 (bet365)
