Roberto Bautista Agut v Tommy Paul Head to Head

Agut Looking To Continue Good  Start To Season

Spaniard Roberto Bautista Agut has been among the more consistent players on the tour for the last couple seasons. Since the Covid-19 hiatus, he however lost his consistency and performed poorly closing out 2020 in both the US & French Opens with early losses failing to make the second week and in turn dropping out of the top ten of the rankings.

The 2021 season started well for him with a win at the ATP Cup against Alex de Minaur but has been followed by losses that week to Stefanos Tsitsipas and Matteo Berrettini. An opening round loss at the Australian Open to Radu Albot was the icing on the cake to end a disappointing trip Down Under.

Things looked up for him at Montpellier where he made the finals before losing to David Goffin, but it was another disappointing outing with a first round loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina at Rotterdam.

Agut had a good outing at Doha with some well sought wins against the likes of Reilly Opelka and in-form Kazakh Alexander Bublik, before an outstanding three-set clutch victory against top seed and 2020 US Open winner Dominic Thiem. The Spaniard carried the confidence forward to defeat in-form top ten player Andrey Rublev in the semi-finals as well and just as he looked the favorite for a tenth career title in the finals, another player making a comeback, Nikoloz Basilashvili defeated him for the Doha title.

While the ATP 500 in Dubai saw an early loss at the hands of Jannik Sinner, Agut had a good outing in Miami with a quarter-final win against world number two Daniil Medvedev. Although another loss to Italian teenager Jannik Sinner ended his Miami campaign, the Spaniard will be happy with how the first quarter of the year has ended and will hope to carry his form further with the clay season getting started.

Agut was up against the number one American Taylor Fritz in the opener here and with a very convincing win set the trend for what he hopes will be a good week ahead.

Tricky Task For American

American Tommy Paul has not had an impressive season and struggled to win consecutive matches on the tour. His best performance has been at the Rotterdam ATP 500 where he defeated Lorenzo Sonego in comfortable fashion in the first round, but was made to fight against Alexander Bublik in the second round. However, he looked jaded as he was beaten by Marton Fucsovics in straight sets in the quarterfinals.

Paul began the year with a round of 16 exit at Delray Beach and then won a match to enter the Round of 32 at the ATP 250 before a second round loss at the Australian Open.

Paul’s struggles continued in both Acapulco and Miami, where he did not progress beyond the first round. In Acapulco, he fell to Milos Raonic in straight sets. While in Miami, the American came across a supremely confident Marcos Giron, who knocked him out of the competition in Round 1.

The American was handed a walkover in the opener here by Spain’s Pedro Martinez leading 4-1 and will be aware that the opposition quality will be considerably higher here on.

Agut v Paul Prediction and Tip

While Tommy Paul has the skill set to challenge Agut, the Spaniard has been in good touch of late and has too many weapons for the American. Expect Agut to win in straight sets.

Tip: Agut to win in straight sets: 8/11 (bet365)
