If Renata Zarazua thought she could take advantage of Tomljanovic’s underwhelming season so far, she was put to place by the Aussie’s rasping groundstrokes. The difference between the two players came on their second serves with Tomljanovic winning 56% of those points while Zarazua claiming only three of her own 15 points second serve points.
As a result, Tomljanovic managed to ward off all the four break-points in the match while breaking her opponent every single of the five times she got a chance.
Tomljanovic had earlier made it to the third round of the Charleston Open last week too, with wins over Marie Bouzkova and Christina McHale. The question is if she can continue to exhibit that kind of form against a player who has a decent clay court record otherwise but surprised a few with a maiden WTA title on indoor hard courts.

Tauson Shrugs Off Bogota Defeat
A title win on the ITF circuit for the 18-year-old Tauson looked to be par for the course given her performances on that circuit over the last few seasons but for her to then qualify for the Lyon Open on the WTA tour and run through all her opponents in straight sets to lift her first ever WTA trophy has been one of the shock results of the season.
Tauson has struggled a tad after that though, losing in the first round at both, the St. Petersburg Open and then the Bogota Open on clay.
She would be pleased to have come through in the first round here in Charleston, defeating Ludmilla Samsonova in straight sets, especially after having lost the Bogota match after winning the opening set.
The Danish world number 101 needed an hour and 21 minutes to get past Samsonova 6-3, 6-3, with five breaks of serves off the five opportunities she got. And while she lost her own serve twice, Tauson looked to be at her dominating best from start to finish.
Can she now upset her Aussie counterpart for a place in the quarterfinal?
