Cuevas in His First Match Since Melbourne

Cuevas is now getting to the veteran stage of a career that has brought him six singles career titles, all of them on clay. He has also enjoyed success on the doubles court, including winning the French Open title back in 2008.

However, his last victory came at the Brazil Open in 2017, and he is no longer in that sort of form. although this year he has played very little tennis so far.

He travelled to Australia, where he played in the warm-up event, the Great Ocean Road Classic, losing to Hubert Hurkasz in the third round. At the Australian Open itself, he beat Andreas Seppi of Italy in the first round, before his run was ended by local man Alex de Minaur.

That, though, was the last time he stepped on court in a competitive match, having chosen to sit out the entire South American clay court season this year.

Ruusuvouri Confident from Zverev Win in Miami

Ruusuvouri comes from a country with no history of producing tennis players, so he is something of a trailblazer, and has now reached an al-time high in singles rankings.

He has enjoyed considerable success on the junior tours, reaching 12 finals and winning ten of them, significantly, they have all been on hard courts, and he is less adept on clay.

After reaching the second round of the Australian Open , and then again in Marseille, he was forced to qualify in Dubai, yet again reaching the second round.

However, he then defied expectations in Miami, by reaching the quarter-finals, his best ever performance in a Masters’ event, eventually losing to Jannik Sinner. In the course of that run, he beat Alexander Zverev, the world number six, one of the best results of his career to date.

This is his first match on clay, though, since losing in the first round of the French Open last September.

Cuevas v Ruusuvouri Prediction and Tip

Given the surface, Cuevas will start the favourite against a player more at home on a hard court. The one question mark is fitness – the Argentine has not played for more than two months, so there may be a question over his stamina.

Tip: Ruusuvouri to win: 4/7 (bet365)
