Kasatkina is one of only two women’s singles players this season to have won two WTA titles – world number one Ash Barty being the other. And that’s the kind of form she takes to her first round match on the clay court surface of Istanbul for her first round match.
The Russian’s last outing this season had come at her home competition, in St. Petersburg and Kasatkina had got past three Russians and Clara Tauson to win her second title of the season. Her previous tournament victory had come in Melbourne at the Phillip Island Trophy.
Her first appearance on clay this season comes on the back of a second round appearance at the French Open last season and a third round showing at the Italian Open. There she had held Victoria Azarenka to a 6-6 scoreline in the first set, only to twist her ankle and before being forced to retire from their match.
A teary Kasatkina has done well since then to come back this season to get to a 15-4 won-loss record but how she starts on clay will be a factor.

Mrdeza Loves Her Clay on ITF Level
With a peak ranking of 150th in her career, Mrdeza doesn’t boast of the kind of credentials which would send shivers down her opponent’s spine.
Add a best showing at Grand Slams of having never gone past the qualifying stage in all but one occasion and we are looking at a kind of player who will start off a heavy second favourite in this encounter.
That said, if one digs deeper than just looking at WTA performances and we are looking at a player with immense experience and title wins at the ITF circuit, having reached 26 finals at that level. She has won eight of those, with six coming on clay.
Whether she would be able to convert that form on this level remains to be seen.
