Kenin in Strife in 2021

Kenin, who won the Australian Open in 2020, surprising almost everyone with her heroics in Melbourne, has been unable to recreate the same magic in 2021. In fact, she has failed to find any sort of momentum in her play and that’s why she has struggled to win enough matches this season.

The 22-year-old American, who was the defending Australian Open champion, was stunned by Kontaveit’s compatriot Kaia Kanepi in the second round. Even though, Kenin’s loss was a big upset, it didn’t come out of the blue because she had suffered an almost identical fate in Abu Dhabi, where she was beaten by Maria Sakkari of Greece in a three set encounter.

Since her defeat in Melbourne, Kenin’s problems have compounded manifold. Her form has deteriorated to such an extent that she has only been able to compile a 7-6 win/loss record in 2021. Indeed, her miserable form has been the prime reason behind her string of poor losses on the women’s circuit.

After her failure on the hard courts, Kenin failed to make a smooth transition on clay as well as she was beaten in the first round of the tournament in Charleston and she would look to avoid a similar fate in Stuttgart on Wednesday.

Kontaveit Begins Stuttgart with Win

Kenin would be up against World No. 27 Anett Kontaveit, who is an aggressive baseliner and can hit a flurry of winners in quick succession. Moreover, she uses a variety of strokes to force her opponents into submission.

Undoubtedly, Kontaveit is a dominating player, who forces her rivals to hit awkward returns and can draw a lot of errors from them as well. The Estonian hits the ball extremely flat from both wings, which disallows her opponents to settle down in any sort of rhythm during the course of their matches.

Certainly, Kontaveit’s solid counterpunching style can make her adversaries struggle because not many players on the WTA tour have the weapons to neutralize them. By hitting the ball with extreme pace and power, the Estonian creates a lot of problems for her opponents on the court.

Kontaveit opened her Stuttgart campaign with a solid win over Julia Middendorf of Germany on Tuesday and will look to continue her run in Germany this week.

Kenin v Kontaveit Prediction and Tip

While, there’s no doubt that Kenin is a far more accomplished player, it will be Kontaveit, who may upset the American here in three sets.

Tip: Kontaveit to win: 8/13 (bet365)
