Berrettini Stumbles, Then Crushes Daniel

Having won his first two rounds in straight sets, Berrettini looked to have begun his semifinal against Taro Daniel in the same vein. He was up a break early in the set and then broke Daniel yet again in the sixth game to carve out a set win.

And when the second set started off with Berrettini going 2-0 up, the writing seemed to be on the wall and his opponent’s fairy tale story looked to be ending. Instead Berrettini stumbled badly, first failing to serve out for the match, and then falling in the tie-breaker for the match to be levelled at a set apiece.

That turnaround didn’t last for long though as Berrettini charged forward with three breaks of serve in the final set to complete what turned out to be a surprising victory.

Berrettini had earlier overcome Marco Cecchinato and Filip Krajinovic in straight sets following a first round bye and will now be gunning for his fourth ATP title and third on clay.

Karatsev Registers Biggest Career Win

When Karatsev last played Novak Djokovic in a semifinal, it was at Australian Open earlier this year and he had been tamed in straight sets. It turned out to be quite different this time around.

The Russian needed three hours and 27 minutes but managed to upset Djokovic in his own home tournament, winning in three sets 7-5, 4-6, 6-4 to seal his first ever clay court final. Earlier this season, he had also won his maiden ATP title which had come on the hard courts of Dubai.

What was absolutely stunning about the win was his ability to thwart Djokovic at crucial times during the match with Karatsev saving 23 of the 28 break-points he faced in the entire encounter. In fact, the third set was a set of break-points for both players with Djokovic getting 10 opportunities and Karatsev helping himself to seven.

In the end, of the aforementioned 17 break-points, only one was converted – by Karatsev – and that was enough to complete the Russian’s magical moment. He described it as the best win of his career but can he now recover quickly from a gruelling contest like that to try and add another feather to his cap?

Berrettini v Karatsev Prediction and Tip

Interestingly enough Karatsev starts off as a favourite at 4/5 with bet365 but having played the longest three-setter of the season and in his own words, having “fought for every ball”, it would be interesting to see if he can do the same in the final as well.

Tip: Berrettini to win: 1/1 (bet365)
