Marterer in a Main Draw Match in a While

Marterer is a former Munich Open semifinalist who has had a poor time at the highest level in recent times. So much so, the German hasn’t had a lot of results going his way even at the Challenger level.

At only the Quimper Challenger in February did he even manage to make it to the quarterfinal, with other tournaments seeing him crash out even earlier than that. Shifting his focus to clay more recently, Marterer suffered back to back second round defeats in the Challenger competitions played in Split, having come into those tournaments following a first round exit in Lille.

The good news for the 214th-ranked German is one of his best recent performances on the circuit had come on clay, in Kitzbuhel last season, where as a qualifier he reached the quarterfinal.

Berankis Makes it as Lucky Loser

It shouldn’t have taken Berankis too long to get past Max Rehberg in his first qualifying round here in Munich considering he has never been ranked inside the top 1000. The Lithuanian, however, dropped a set to Rehberg too before edging into the second qualifier.

And unsurprisingly, against Ilya Ivashka, all he could manage to do was to win a set before fading away, even getting bagelled in the final set.

So while Berankis made it through as a lucky loser, he will know how much improvement his form needs to get him back on track.

After all, Berankis has won a total of only five main draw matches this season and only one of them came on clay – a first round win at Marbella against Lucas Pouille despite having gone into the match as a second favourite. He will hope for more of the same.

Berankis v Marterer Prediction and Tip

Marterer, despite being ranked that low starts a favourite at 4/6 because of how Berankis has gone in recent times. Expecting the Lithuanian to spring a surprise here though.

Tip: Berankis to win: 11/10 (bet365)
