Korda Resumes after Belgrade Ouster

Korda has had a solid season to start things off but all of those results came on the hard court surfaces. The switch to clay hasn’t been the most sterling.

Starting out at Serbia Open earlier this week, Korda fell to Aljaz Bedene in first round, losing in a gruelling three-setter that went to a final set tie-breaker. This, coming from a player who impressed everyone with his form at the previous season’s French Open.

Playing in the main draw of a Grand Slam for just the second time in his career after Korda had won three qualifiers to make it there, the American then overcame Andreas Seppi, John Isner and Pedro Martinez in the first three rounds to make it through to the round of 16.

And while he easily lost to Rafael Nadal in that match, Korda has given enough evidence to prove he can take on some of the best on clay. Can he shrug off his Belgrade shocker and move on to a solid performance here though?

Galan Eases Through the Qualifiers

Galan is a much better player on clay than any other surface and that is also reflected in the amount of clay court tennis he typically plays. Less than four months into the season, Galan has already featured in eight tournaments on this surface including this one.

And while his 7-7 win-loss record, which includes the two qualifying victories in Munich, isn’t the greatest, it is on clay that he has his best chances of going deeper into tournaments.

It’s because it was on clay that he won both his titles on the Challenger circuit, and even here, in Munich, the manner of his wins in the qualifiers pointed to his comfort level. First he crushed Mischa Zverev 6-3, 6-3 and then routed Norbert Gombos in the second qualifying round 6-3, 6-4 to enter the main draw.

Korda will be a tough nut to crack though.

Korda v Galan Prediction and Tip

Despite Korda’s early defeat in the previous tournament, it seems like only one way this match seems to be headed and that’s in favour of Korda.

Tip: Korda to win in straight sets: 1/1 (bet365)
