Kei Nishikori v Kevin Anderson Head to Head

There have been 10 previous matches between Nishikori and Anderson and the Japanese world number 41 leads 6-4. Their last match came at the 2018 ATP Finals where Anderson had dropped just one game en route an easy win.

Interestingly, their only previous match on clay came in 2017 in Geneva and Nishikori had needed a final set tie-breaker to register a victory.

Nishikori Coming off Nadal Fight

Not too many players take a set off Rafael Nadal on clay. And not too many do that after having lost the first set 6-0.

Nishikori did that in his third round defeat at the hands of the Spaniard champion at Barcelona Open last week, having earlier made it there with three-set victories over Guido Pella and Cristian Garin.

Against Pella in the first round there, Nishikori was a favourite but facing up to Garin, who is a world number 22 at the moment, the Japanese player had gone in at 6/4 odds and registered a gruelling 7-6 (5), 4-6, 6-1 win.

What would have pleased Nishikori no ends is it was his first tournament on clay since having played a total of a mere six matches overall last season. Can he now continue the spark this 31-year-old veteran had shown last week?

Anderson Shocks Tiafoe

Having come into his opening round match at odds of 2/1, Anderson looked to have started well but once he missed out on a break-point chance and then having lost his own serve and by extension the opening set, the South African was staring at the wrong end of the barrel.

Tiafoe broke Anderson yet again to take a 4-2 lead in the second set, and then served for the match at 5-4 soon after before Anderson made a comeback. He broke back, forced a tie-breaker and then complete the match-equalling set win.

Broken again in the fourth game of the final set, Anderson broke back twice, missed out on the opportunity to serve for the match but then converted his first match-point in the tie-breaker to make it to round two.

This fighting performance having come into a tournament on a surface he doesn’t prefer playing after having a 2-3 win-loss record all season would be a huge boost to Anderson’s confidence.

Nishikori v Anderson Prediction and Tip

Nishikori is an obvious favourite despite Anderson’s fighting capabilities and we are expecting him to come through in three sets in this one.

Tip: Nishikori to win in three sets: 3/1 (bet365)
