Daria Kasatkina v Irina-Camelia Begu Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 23-year-old Russian, and the Romanian, who is seven years her senior.

Kasatkina Starts off Double Winner in 2021

Kasatkina has already enjoyed a fine start to 2021.

She won her third career title in Australia, lifting the Phillip Island Trophy, beating Marie Bouzkova of the Czech republic in three sets. And then last month, she added another trophy to her cabinet, by winning her home event of the St. Petersburg Open, although she did have a slice of fortune on that occasion.

The Russian was leading compatriot Margarita Gasparyan by a set and a break when her opponent was forced to retire with injury.

Kasatkina began her clay season in Istanbul but that did not go so well – she lost to the Ukrainian Marta Kostyuk, the world 77, in straight sets, in the second round.

That does not mean she struggles on clay. She won the Charleston Open on that surface in 2017, and, a year later, was a quarter-finalist at the French Open.

Begu Starts off as a Qualifier

Begu has won four WTA singles titles ,but the last of those triumphs, on home soil on clay in Bucharest was nearly four years ago.

At that time, she was a top 30 player, but, since then, she has steadily drifted down the rankings, and it is a measure of her diminished standing in the game that she had to qualify for Madrid, winning two matches to take her place in the main draw..

She enjoyed a modicum of success in Melbourne earlier this year, reaching the third round of the Australian Open pre-cursor, the Gippsland Trophy, and the Phillip Island Trophy which followed it, although she was knocked out of the main event itself in the first round.

Since then, though, she has not played much tennis. She qualified for Dubai, only to lose in the first round and then lost at the same stage in Miami.

This is her first clay court event of 2021.

Kasatkina v Begu Prediction and Tip

Kasatkina ought to begin the match full of confidence after the year she has had already, and should have too much for the Romanian qualifier, who is not the player that she once was in her prime.

Tip: Kasatkina to win: 5/8 (bet365)
