Barty Steamrolls Past Shelby

Barty has been in some of the best form she would have seen in her career and her first round win here in Madrid was a close reflection of that. Taking on Shelby Rogers in her opener, there was a sense of a tense encounter despite the Aussie’s superior record against her and while she was always the favourite, not too many would have expected what was to follow.

The world number one needed an hour and one minute to register a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Rogers, in a match which saw the Aussie barely get tested.

A break of serve in the fourth game of the opening set, and then another four as Rogers served to stay in the set allowed Barty to clinch the first with ease. In the second, Barty raced off to a 3-0 lead, and then broke again before serving it out at 5-1.

While Barty got herself four breaks of serves in the entire match, she did not face even one break-point in return, making this one of her easiest wins in recent times. She now takes on a player who has never been in the top 50 on the WTA charts.

Zidansek Beats Hsieh. Again.

It has been a crazy draw in the women’s singles section in Madrid with six of the qualifiers and lucky losers facing off amongst each other. As a result of that, Zidansek, who had earlier overcome Su-wei Hsieh in her second qualifying round to make the main draw, was pitted to face the same opponent again in her opening round as well.

And Zidansek did it again, winning in straight sets to set up this second round meeting against Barty.

Having dropped just one game to Hsieh in the qualifying match, the world number 80 came away a 6-2, 6-4 winner to march into round two. This result comes on the back of a stunning showing from Zidansek on the clay courts of the Bogota Open played earlier this month where she finished runner-up after four successive straight-set wins.

Barty will prove to be a different kind of a challenge but as far as confidence is concerned, Zidansek will be brimming with it.

Barty v Zidansek Prediction and Tip

Barty all the way. Unless there are any last minute injury concerns, the Aussie should come through in straight sets with the only question being how much of a fight can the in-form Zidansek put up given her recent performances.

Tip: Barty to win AND Over 18.5 games in the match: 6/5 (bet365)
