A third round appearance at the Australian Open and a semifinal in Dubai could have meant a lot more had Shapovalov been consistent through the rest of the season so far too.

Unfortunately for the Canadian, his form has seen a drastic dip this year and that means he could have problems starting out here.

Especially since, Shapovalov hasn’t had the greatest time on clay most of his career, including earlier this year. Starting off with an opening win over Jeremy Chardy at the Barcelona Open which was his first tournament on red dirt, Shapovalov then fell to Felix Auger-Aliassime in the next round in straight sets.

This was followed by a three-set defeat at the hands of Corentin Moutet in the opener in Estoril despite starting out at 1/2 odds favourite in that encounter.

He now takes on a player who form has been anything but excellent which gives Shapovalov a chance to overturn his own woes.

Lajovic on a Four-Match Losing Streak

When Lajovic reached the fourth round of Australian Open this year, Lajovic looked like he had put his ATP Cup woes behind him, a competition where he had lost both his singles match. Unfortunately for him, Lajovic’s stocks have fallen drastically since.

In fact the Serb has won just three matches from the following eight tournaments, making it a difficult time for Lajovic.

What makes it worse for Lajovic is he is now on a five-match losing streak on clay. Three of those defeats came this season, with Lajovic losing his openers at Monte Carlo Masters, Belgrade Open and then in Munich last week.

That last defeat to Mackenzie McDonald would particularly hurt given he was up against a player whose own clay court record hasn’t been too much to write home about. Lajovic needs a turnaround in fortunes and quickly at that but can it come against the world number 14?

Shapovalov v Lajovic Prediction and Tip

In a match between two players struggling for form, Shapovalov starts off a favourite at 1/2 and it seems very likely he would go through here. The question is if he can get through in straight sets.
