Novak Djokovic v Lorenzo Sonego Head to Head

There has only been previous meeting between Djokovic and Sonego and it is the latter who won that shock encounter. It came at the 2020 Vienna Open where a rather flat Djokovic captured just three games in the entire contest to fall in that quarterfinal.

Djokovic Registers Comeback Win v Tsitsipas

At multiple times during his quarterfinal in Rome, Djokovic looked buried by Stefanos Tsitsipas, only to come back and register one of the best wins of his recent career.

The world number one came back from 2-4 down in second set, having lost his serve yesterday, and then overcame another break of serve as Tsitsipas served for the match at 5-4 in the final set to enter the Rome Masters semifinal.

In a match that lasted three hours and 18 minutes, Djokovic found a way back every time he fell behind to win 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 and remain in with a chance to win one clay court competition in the lead-up to Roland-Garros.

The Serb, who was broken five times in the match, had 23 chances to break his opponent’s serve in the encounter and while he did break Tsitsipas six times – one more time than he was himself broken – he would want to do a lot better than that.

Especially given his hunt for another Grand Slam title on clay looms large. Can he first clinch this semifinal in Rome though?

Sonego Stuns Rublev in Three

Sonego had played in five editions of the Rome Masters before this and reached and lost in the second round twice as his best performance. Now he is in the semifinal having beaten Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev in back to back matches.

In his quarterfinal match against Rublev that was played today because of inclement weather at its earlier scheduled time on Friday, Sonego also came back from a set down to seal a win.

The Italian needed two hours and 35 minutes as he overturned two breaks of serve in the first set to never get broken again in the match. In turn he broke Rublev once in the second and twice in the third to clinch his first ever Masters 1000 semifinal spot.

Earlier Sonego had needed three sets and two tie-breakers to carve out a narrow victory over Thiem before winning 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 against Rublev.

Can he repeat this magic against Djokovic?

Djokovic v Sonego Prediction and Tip

It is no surprise that Djokovic is such an overwhelming favourite here but given he is coming off such a gruelling encounter with Tsitsipas and has now to play a second one on the same day, things could even out slightly. Expecting a fighting contest again.
