Karolina Pliskova v Iga Swiatek Head to Head

There has been no match played between these two players at the highest level but they did face off in an exhibition match last year at the Tipsport Elite Trophy. Swiatek had won the match tie-breaker in the third set 10-4.

Pliskova Makes it Three in a Row

By defeating Petra Martic on Saturday, Pliskova made it to her third successive final at the Italian Open having won it in 2019 and finished runnerup in 2020. And while it wasn’t the most straightforward of wins, Pliskova would be rather pleased with her performance in this competition after having struggled through most of the rest of the season.

Martic, who had lost to Simona Halep in the final of the previous Italian Open final, needed three sets and nearly two hours to get past Croatia’s Martic and seal her place in the final. She won 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 with the middle set proving to be an aberration in an otherwise solid performance from the former world number one’s racquet.

Pliskova broke her opponent in the very first game and soon made it 5-1 with a second break before closing out the first set.

In the second, she saved three break-points to go up 3-2 but Martic’s new-found form allowed her to carve out back to back breaks in the seventh and ninth games allowed her a comeback.

Having earlier taken out Jelena Ostapenko in the quarterfinal, Pliskova exchanged breaks with Martic to take them to 2-2 in the final set but from there on it was one-way traffic.

Pliskova now faces her toughest opponent of the competition which would make for an intriguing contest here.

Swiatek Silences Fellow Teenager

Not for nothing is Swiatek a French Open champion and time and again has proved that win last season was no fluke. Saturday was one more of such days as she downed two solid opponents in a single day to reach the final.

After her quarterfinal got postponed to the following day, she first got the better of Elina Svitolina 6-2, 7-5 to make it to the last four and then took down Cori Gauff in a tough, straight-set win. She won 7-6 (3), 6-3 to reach her second WTA final of the season.

Swiatek and Gauff exchanged one break of serve apiece in the first set to take them to the tie-breaker, but it was the Pole who ran away it by winning six points in a row. And once the momentum shifted in her favour, Swiatek then broke Gauff in the fourth and sixth games to leave Gauff way behind.

While the American got one break back in the next game, Swiatek ensured there would be no more surprises as she completed her victory in an hour and 48 minutes.

Pliskova v Swiatek Prediction and Tip

While exhaustion could be a factor, Swiatek will enter this match as a favourite given her form on clay and we back her to win her second title of the season despite Pliskova’s experience.
