Sasnovich Rallies to Beat Wang

World No. 103 Aliaksandra Sasnovich rallied from a set down to oust China’s Xiyu Wang in the first round of the Belgrade Open on Tuesday.

The Belarusian, who lost the first set tiebreak, outplayed the 20-year-old Chinese in the next two sets to win the two-hour-and-31-minute contest 6-7 (6-8), 6-0, 6-2.

A former top 30 player, Sasnovich improved to 8-7 in the main draws and 9-8 overall (including qualifiers) this year.

The 27-year-old right-hander had reached the quarterfinals of the WTA 125 event in Saint Malo this month. Sasnovich defeated France’s Tessah Andrianjafitrimo and Slovenia’s Tamara Zidansek in the first two rounds before going down to Switzerland’s Viktorija Golubic in the last eight.

A two-time WTA finalist, Sasnovich is yet to win a title. She was the runner-up in Seoul in 2015 and Brisbane in 2018.

This year, Sasnovich has made just one first-round exit from eight main draw appearances, after she was beaten by Annett Kontaveit in the Round of 128 at the Australian Open. However, the Belarusian has not been able to go past the second round in six of those eight tournaments.

Bucsa Wins Her First WTA Main Draw Match

Facing Sasnovich in the Round of 16 will be World No. 172 Cristina Bucsa of Spain, who knocked out eighth seed Danka Kovinic of Montenegro to win her first WTA main draw match on Monday.

Having lost the first set to Kovinic, Bucsa made a remarkable comeback to win the contest 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 in two hours and four minutes.

The 23-year-old Spaniard had entered the main draw after winning her qualifying rounds against Belarus’ Yuliya Hatouka and Serbia’s Dejana Radanovic. Bucsa defeated Hatouka 6-3, 6-1 in the first qualifier and was leading Radanovic 6-4, 2-0 in the second qualifying round, when the Serb retired.

Bucsa had earlier qualified for the main draw in Istanbul in April, but went down to Katerina Siniakova in a tough three-set first-round encounter.

A four-time winner on the ITF Circuit, Bucsa will now be aiming for another upset on Wednesday that will earn her a maiden WTA quarterfinal spot.

Sasnovich v Bucsa Prediction and Tip

Sasnovich’s experience will give her the edge but Bucsa will take a lot of confidence after beating the World No. 61 Kovinic in the first round. Expect a close contest with the match going the distance.
