Osorio Serrano Sends Zhang Packing

Colombia’s Maria Camila Osorio Serrano continued her impressive run on clay as she knocked out the third seed Zhang Shuai of China in the first round of the Belgrade Open on Monday.

The 19-year-old, who won her maiden WTA title in Bogota last month, needed two hours and 23 minutes to see off the World No. 43, 6-2, 1-6, 7-6 (7-4).

In a closely contested first-round match, Osorio Serrano saved 10 of 16 break points and converted five of 14, winning a total of 98 points in the match, one more than her opponent Zhang.

Osorio Serrano had qualified for the main draw by beating Hungary’s Dalma Galfi 6-3, 6-7, 6-4 in the first qualifying round and China’s You Xiaodi 6-4, 6-3 in the second round of qualification.

Monday’s win improved Osorio Serrano to 9-2 in the main draws this year.

Having failed to qualify for the Australian Open and having lost her first round match in Monterrey, Osorio Serrano struck form on clay, winning five matches in a row as a wild card in Bogota and clinching her first WTA title by beating Tamara Zidansek in the final.

A former junior No. 1 and the 2019 U.S. Open girls’ champion, Osorio Serrano carried her Bogota form to Charleston as she reached the semifinals by beating higher-ranked players in Magda Linette, Christina McHale and Clara Tauson in the first three rounds respectively.

However, an eight-match unbeaten run finally came to an end after the Colombian was beaten by eventual champion Astra Sharma in the semifinal.

Having got off to a good start in Belgrade, Osorio Serrano will have her eyes fixed on a third successive WTA quarterfinal berth.

Rakhimova Knocks Out Danilovic

On Wednesday, Osorio Serrano will face Kamilla Rakhimova, as the Russian teen ousted Serbia’s Olga Danilovic in straight sets on Tuesday.

Rakhimova needed just an hour and 27 minutes to beat the World No. 158, 6-2, 6-4.

The Russian, who reached the second round of the French Open last year by beating Shelby Rogers in the opener, qualified for the main draw in Belgrade after beating Serbia’s Iva Sepa 6-0, 6-3 on Saturday and compatriot Anastasia Gasanova 7-5, 7-6 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

Tuesday’s win was only the second main draw win for the 136th-ranked Rakhimova in 2021. The Russian had earlier beaten compatriot Daria Mishina in the first round in St Petersburg.

The 19-year-old right-hander, who has five ITF titles, had finished runner-up at an ITF event in Zagreb earlier this month.

Osorio Serrano v Rakhimova Prediction and Tip

Although Rakhimova has started off well, she will find it tough against the in-form Osorio Serrano. Expect the Colombian to advance with a straight sets win.
