Pablo Carreno Busta v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

Carreno Busta leads the head-to-head 2-1, winning their first meeting on the clay courts of the Cordenons Challenger in 2013, and the Round of 16 of the Paris Masters in 2020. Gombos’ win came on French soil in the first round of Montpellier last season.

Carreno Busta Withdrew from Rome

Pablo Carreno Busta will be keen to extend his good run of form, and simultaneously replicate his quarterfinal showing from last season on Parisian dirt (the second time in his career he reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros).

Carreno Busta has put together a solid run on European clay – winning a first title in almost two years at the Andalucia Open. As a result, the 29-year-old Spaniard is now on the verge of returning to the world’s top 10.

Currently ranked 12th in the world, Carreno Busta’s preparations for the French Open hit a snag after he was forced to withdraw from his scheduled second-round match against Kei Nishikori at the Rome Masters. The nature of his injury has not been revealed, but it could be precautionary especially with a lot of points to defend in the next fortnight.

The two-time French Open quarterfinalist will look to snap a three-match losing streak when he meets Norbert Gombos for the fourth time.

Gombos Could Surprise In His Second Appearance

After six previous tries, Norbert Gombos was finally able to reach the main draw of the French Open last season. The Slovak took it up a notch by winning two main draw matches on his debut before he was eliminated by eventual semifinalist Diego Schwartzman.

Now on his second successive main draw appearance thanks to his ability to maintain a top 100 ranking, Gombos will look to cause an upset against the 12th-seeded Carreno Busta.

Gombos’ season started dismally, failing to win a single main draw match on hard courts in the first quarter. However, his upturn in form once the claycourt season began has been a real confidence-booster.

The Slovak has reached the quarterfinals or better in four out of five tournaments he has played since the start of April. His major highlight came at the Prague Challenger where he made the semifinals.

Carreno Busta v Gombos Prediction and Tip

Carreno Busta pulled out of Rome for an undisclosed reason. Could it be precautionary or he could be slightly hurt? Either way, he is still at odds to win this match comfortably. Gombos can be uninspiring at times, but there is real value in backing the Slovak to push the Spaniard close.
