Sara Sorribes Tormo v Saisai Zheng Head to Head

The two players have never met before on the WTA Tour.

Tormo Looking for Glory on Clay

The 24-year-old Spaniard has had a pretty good season so far in 2021. She won the first WTA singles title of her career in Mexico – a feat that propelled her into the top 50 and brought her to the career-best ranking of World No. 46.

Tormo has been particularly impressive on hard courts – she was a quarterfinalist in WTA Abu Dhabi and a semifinalist in WTA Monterrey. Additionally, Tormo also made it to the final eight as the Miami Open where she ultimately succumbed to Bianca Andreescu.

On clay, however, she has been struggling a bit as she looks to deliver similar performances on the surface. She lost her opening round bouts in Copa Colsanitas and the Madrid Open to Sara Errani and Simona Halep respectively.

In the Italian Open and the WTA Parma, Tormo did reach the second round but only to lose to Aryna Sabalenka and Errani once again.

What’s quite interesting is of the 10 ITF singles titles that she has won in her career, 9 of them have come on the clay courts. She is obviously familiar with the surface but has been out of sorts this season.

Zheng Having a Mediocre Season

Saisai Zheng has had a pretty opposite season to Tormo’s. With a win-loss tally of 5-11, she has been slipping further in the rankings.

The Chinese player participated in just three clay tournaments – the WTA Bogota, Madrid Open, and Italian Open. In either of the three, she failed to move past the second round. In Madrid, she fell to Halep while in Rome, Barbora Krejcikova defeated her in the first round.

This is certainly not surprising, given the poor start to her season. Zheng went through six tournaments (entire Australian Open Series and the Middle-East Swing) without winning a single game. It wasn’t until the Monterrey Open that she finally snapped her losing streak and reached the quarterfinal.

Tormo v Zheng Prediction and Tip

Zheng has struggled a great this season and by the looks of it, she is still struggling. Tormo, on the other hand, has looked comparatively better, and more than that, she is in high spirits.

Tormo will start this game as the favourite, it is just a matter of how she navigates to the win.
