It wasn’t the best of starts for Cilic as he took to grass but eventually he came through in straight sets to set up a second round meeting.
The Croat needed to save five break-points in the very first game he served and while he wasn’t broken in the first set, he found it difficult to do the same to Rudolf Molleker. In fact with Molleker having faced no break-points in the entire first set till it reached 6-5, a tie-breaker looked inevitable.
It was at that stage Cilic got his first opportunity and took full toll to convert and win the set.
He followed it up with a break in the very second game and held on to go on and clinch the second set and the match in an hour and 18 minutes.
What Cilic would now hope for is to make it back to back wins, something he hasn’t done since Estoril Open early May. He has a highly unpredictable opponent up against him.

Basilashvili Edges Past Brown
Again, it wasn’t the easiest straight-set win but Basilashvili would be relieved he came through his opener against Dustin Brown.
The Georgian player registered a 6-3, 7-6 (4) win in an hour and 23 minutes to set up a second round meeting after a season full of bizarre results.
Because coming into this tournament in Stuttgart, Basilashvili has already won two titles this year and yet was on a 15-14 win-loss record – thanks mainly because of some highly erratic results off his bat.
And even in this opener against a player ranked 303rd in the world, Basilashvili faced seven break-points in the match and was broken once. He managed an extra break of serve which helped him win the first set and then took the second in a tie-breaker after having faced two set-points off his own serve.
This second round match could well turn out to be a match between two inconsistent players.
