World No. 36 Donna Vekic began her Nottingham Open campaign with a straight sets win over Switzerland’s Leonie Kung on Tuesday.

The 2017 Nottingham champion needed an hour and 35 minutes to win the Round of 32 contest 7-5, 6-1.

Seeded third in the tournament, the Croatian converted five of nine break points in the match. She also got broken once by the World No. 158, who had two breaking opportunities.

Tuesday’s win improved Vekic to 4-4 this year. All her previous three wins had come at the Australian Open, where she reached the Round of 16 for the first time in her career. Following the Melbourne slam, the Croatian needed a knee surgery, which kept her out of action for a while.

A two-time winner on the tour, Vekic who has featured in eight WTA finals, won the 2017 title by beating Johanna Konta in a thrilling three-set final. She also reached the final in the last edition in 2019, but finished runner-up to Caroline Garcia.

In 2018, Vekic was beaten by Konta in the semifinals.

Vekic, who won 91% first-serve points on Tuesday, has a solid record on grass, where she has a winning percentage of 61%.

Stojanovic Battles Past Dodin

Facing Vekic in the third round will be the World No. 87 Nina Stojanovic, who began her Nottingham challenge with 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 win over France’s Oceane Dodin.

Seeded 15th in the tournament, Stojanovic, who received a first-round bye, battled for two hours and 10 minutes before beating the World No. 115.

Stojanovic served 10 aces in the contest and saved 10 of 12 break points, while converting three of 10.

The 24-year-old Serb came into the tournament with an 11-11 record, across levels in 2021. Her best performance came at the Miami Open, where she defeated Linda Fruhvirtova and Bethanie Mattek-Sands in the qualifiers and then continued her winning run in the main draw defeating Heather Watson and Yulia Putintseva in the first two rounds for her first wins at a WTA 1000 event.  She had to pull out of the tournament before her third round match against Naomi Osaka.

Stojanovic came to Nottingham on the back of three consecutive defeats, having lost in the second round in Saint Malo to Jasmine Paolini and the first rounds in Belgrade and Roland Garros to Rebecca Peterson and Nao Hibino respectively.
