Donna Vekic v Camila Giorgi Head to Head

Vekic leads the head-to-head matchup 2-0. She won in Birmingham in 2013 and in Miami in 2018 without dropping a set.

Vekic Ends Eight-Year Drought in Birmingham

After a disappointing campaign at the Nottingham Open, where she won just one match and made a second round exit, Donna Vekic would be happy to have started her Birmingham campaign in style as she needed just 67 minutes to beat Britain’s Francesca Jones 6-3, 6-1 in the opening round on Monday.

The Croatian, who was beaten by Nina Stojanovic in Nottingham, was broken just once on Monday, as she converted five of eight break points, won 82% first serve points, 47% second serve points and 55 percent return points.

A solid grass court player, Vekic has won one of her two titles on the surface, claiming the Nottingham title in 2017.

She also has six runner-up finishes on the tour and one of those was in Birmingham in 2013. Vekic had begun that tournament by beating Giorgi in the first round and went all the way to the final, before going down to Daniella Hantuchova. But since that final, Vekic lost all her matches in Birmingham, losing five between 2014 and 2019, with one of them being a qualifying round in 2016.

Monday’s win ended the five-match losing streak for the Croatian in the tournament.

The World No. 54 has not played much this year due to a right knee surgery following the Australian Open. She is 5-5 in 2021, and her best showing so far was at the Australian Open, where the 24-year-old reached the fourth round for the first time in her career.

Giorgi Powers Past Gatto-Monticone

Facing Vekic in the next round will be Italy’s Camila Giorgi, who powered past compatriot Giulia Gatto-Monticone in the first round on Monday. The 29-year-old right-hander needed just 69 minutes for a 6-3, 6-0 victory.

A quarterfinalist at Wimbledon in 2018, Giorgi came to Birmingham with a 6-7 record, which included a quarterfinal finish in Lyon, after she was sent packing by Clara Tauson in the last eight.

Giorgi’s best in Birmingham came in 2017, when she came through the qualifiers and went all the way to the quarterfinals before having to withdraw with an injury while trailing Ash Barty in the first set.

Currently ranked 76th in the world, the Italian who reached a career-high ranking of 26 in 2018, has two WTA titles from eight finals. One of those two came on grass in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015, while the other came in Linz in 2018.

She featured in two finals in 2019, but is yet to return to another title clash since then.
