Elina Svitolina v Ekaterina Alexandrova Head to Head

Svitolina holds an impressive 3-0 lead over the Russian with two of those wins coming this season. They last met in the Miami Open earlier in the year where the Ukrainian sailed through in straight sets.

Svitolina Seeking her First Title in Over a Year

While Elina Svitolina has done a brilliant job of staying afloat in the top 7, she is a player who can very well take a stab at becoming the World No. 1. The 26-year-old peaked at #3 in the singles ranking in 2019 and since then, she has somewhat cemented her position among the best on the tour.

A big reason why she has been able to do so is because of her ability to deliver deep runs consistently. Case in point, she reached the quarterfinal back to back in the WTA Abu Dhabi and the Gippsland Trophy. Svitolina then reached the fourth round in the Australian Open and eventually, made it to the semis in the Miami Open (On the way, she beat Petra Kvitova in three sets).

The Ukrainian was just as impressive in the clay swing; she reached the semis at the Stuttgart Open and the quarterfinal in the Italian Open, losing to Iga Swiatek. At the French Open, she could have had another deep run but was stopped in her tracks by the eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova.

As for her performance on clay, she is certainly a formidable opponent to face. In the 2019 Wimbledon, she reached the semis although, in the buildup events in Birmingham and Eastbourne, she lost her opening games.

Right here in Berlin, Svitolina is starting with a bye in the second round.

Alexandrova off to a Good Start on Grass

In the opening round of the German Open, Alexandrova dispatched her compatriot Anna Kalinskaya in a little over an hour. It was a clinical performance by the more experienced Russian, who took the game 6-3, 6-2.

In terms of consistency, the 26-year-old has had a pretty similar season to her Ukranian adversary. The only difference is she hasn’t been able to make it to the final few rounds, partly because of her considerably stronger opponents.

In Paris and Strasbourg, Alexandrova was beaten by Krejcikova in the second round and quarterfinal respectively with the Czech moving on to win both those tournaments. Similarly, in the Madrid Open and WTA Stuttgart, she fell to the likes of Victoria Azarenka and Simona Halep. At the start of the season, Alexandrova did reach the fourth round in Abu Dhabi and the semis in the Gippsland Trophy.

In that Melbourne tournament, Alexandrova defeated Halep and Swiatek in what was a brilliant demonstration of her abilities.

Svitolina v Alexandrova Prediction and Tip

Svitolina is a strong player, has a good track record on grass and has had a pretty good season overall. While she is pegged to reach the next round, Alexandrova will definitely put up a good fight.
