Starting out her season at the Grampians Trophy in February, Blinkova has featured in 10 tournaments between then and the WTA $125k event at Bol earlier this month. And in that time period, the Russian has won just one match in the main draw of competitions.
It was only at Bol did she finally managed to get past the first round, and then added two more victories to her kitty to make it to the semifinal. It was against Jasmine Paolini that Blinkova fell away, but one hoped it would have given him bit of a push.
That didn’t show up in the qualifiers at the WTA Berlin last week when Blinkova failed to make it past the 242nd-ranked Mandy Minella on grass.
The Russian has won just one match on grass in her career too, which is another indicator about her preference for this surface but coming up against an inexperienced youngster does give her a chance here.

Tauson Shows Form But Grass Not Her Surface
She is just 18 years old, so that’s a caveat one needs to add to everything here about Tauson. The Danish player has all the makings of becoming a star player at some point and that can be seen from how she clinched her maiden WTA title this season.
That came at the Lyon Open where, on indoor hard-courts, Tauson came through as a qualifier to win seven matches in a row in straight sets to lift the title.
That, however, doesn’t mean she comes into this encounter as an overwhelming favourite and that’s to do with her lack of tennis on grass. In her short career, Tauson has never played a match on grass, irrespective of the level of competition.
And that will make this a totally different proposition and one that the more ‘experienced’ Blinkova would like to take advantage of.
