Karen Khachanov v Mackenzie McDonald Head to Head

The pair have met once before, earlier this year in Marseille on an indoor, hard court, Khachanov winning in straight sets.

Khachanov Has a Decent Wimbledon Record

Although Khachanov is by no means a grass court natural, his record at Wimbledon is decent, reaching the third round twice, and, in 2018, going one step better before losing to Novak Djokovic.

However, he has struggled for form since he last appeared in the Championships here, and, from being Russia’s number one player, has been eclipsed by the rise of Daniil Medvedev, Andrey Rublev and even, to some extent, Aslan Karatsev.

A run to the semi-finals in Lyon before losing to Cameron Norrie suggested better days may be around the corner, but that proved to be something of a false dawn as he lost in the second round of the French Open, and then, in his first appearance of the year on grass, to Rublev in Halle.

Earlier this week, he entered the inaugural Mallorca Open in grass, but, after beating Lucas Pouille of France in the first round, he was defeated by the Spanish veteran Felciano Lopez in three sets.

American McDonald Battles Through Qualifying

In 2018, McDonald achieved his best ever showing at a Grand Slam by reaching the fourth round at Wimbledon, eventually losing to Milos Raonic.

This though is only the second time that the American has qualified for the tournament and he did it the hard way.

In the qualifying competition, he had to come from behind to beat Kimmer Coppejans of Belgian, the world number 191 and again it took him three sets to defeat the Ukrainian Illya Marchenko, currently ranked 153rd.

However, his greatest challenge in the qualifying competition was yet to come. Playing compatriot Maxime Cressy, McDonald found himself two sets down against the World Number 151.

However, he was able to rally and come through in the end in large part due to the high numbers of winners that he produced – 54 in all – and fewer number of unforced errors.

Khachanov v McDonald Prediction and Tip

McDonald is a dangerous opponent for Khachanov to draw in the first round of a major championship and the will need to produce close to his best form if there is not to be an upset.

This match could well go the distance, but Khachanov will begin the favourite.
