Heather Watson v Kristie Ahn Head to Head

While they have never faced off at the highest level, Watson and Ahn did meet on the ITF circuit where the Brit led by a set before the latter withdrew from that encounter.

Watson Makes Birmingham Semifinal

Unsurprisingly, grass is Watson’s favourite surface and that shows in her result.

The Brit had won a mere two matches in the whole of the season coming into the grass swing and suddenly she has registered four more victories to just three losses. Her best performance came in Birmingham where Watson defeated Viktorija Golubic, Shuai Zhang and Donna Vekic to enter the last four stage before falling to Ons Jabeur.

At Eastbourne, in the tournament that followed, Watson put up another sterling showing against Iga Swiatek. She pushed the 2020 French Open winner to a third set before dropping her serve in the final game to go down fighting.

Watson’s best result at a Grand Slam is a third round appearance that has come three times at Wimbledon and once at Australian Open. And while she might find it tough to match that given there’s a potential second round meeting against Petra Kvitova in the works, Watson will look to take it one step at a time here.

Ahn Hoping to Take Off at Wimbledon

At the time of writing, Ahn is the only player to have made it to the women’s singles main draw at 2021 Wimbledon as a lucky loser. And she will hope she can take advantage of her fortune after lost to Monica Niculescu in the third round of qualifiers.

Ahn’s not had a great season and that’s sugar-coating it a little.

Starting out in Monterrey and Miami with qualifying defeats, Ahn then lost five matches in a row in the opening round of competitions – three of which came on the ITF circuit. An opening qualifying loss at French Open ended her clay swing without a win before Ahn finally won her first main draw match of the season.

That came in Nottingham as she got past Jodie Burrage in her opener but then retired from her second round match and lost the first round in the next tournament on the ITF circuit.

Against Watson, Ahn might have had more of a chance on other surfaces but on grass, the Brit will hold the upper hand.

Watson v Ahn Prediction and Tip

Watson is an overwhelming favourite here and that speaks volumes about her opponent’s form more than her own. Backing her to clinch this but not before Ahn puts up a fight.
