Hurkacz Spoils Musetti’s Grass Debut

World No. 18 Hubart Hurkacz ended a six-match losing streak with a straight sets first-round win over 19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti on Tuesday.

The 14th seed, who had last won a match against Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano in Monte Carlo, a week after winning his maiden Masters 1000 title in Miami, needed an hour and 50 minutes to beat the Italian 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), 6-1.

Musetti, who reached the fourth round of the French Open, was playing his first match on grass. He had four break points in the match but Hurkacz saved all four of them. The Pole himself had six breaking chances, capitalising on four of those.

Hurkacz struck 41 winners and made 21 unforced errors, winning a total of 103 points in the match. He also won 86% of his first serve points to reach the second round in his third Wimbledon appearance. After losing in the first round on his debut in 2018, he made it to the third round in 2019, which still remains his best ever showing at a Grand Slam.

The 24-year-old improved to 16-11 overall and 1-2 on grass this year. He had begun the 2021 season by winning his second ATP title, defeating Sebastian Korda in the final of the Delray Beach Open. In Miami, he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, Andrey Rublev in the semis and Jannik Sinner in the final.

Giron Wins Five-Set Thriller Against Ruusuvuori

The United States’ Marcos Giron moved into the second round at Wimbledon with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-2, 0-6, 6-4 win over Finland’s Emil Ruusuvuori on Wednesday.

This was the first time that Giron won a match at Wimbledon having made a first-round exit on his debut in 2019.

The match that swung from one end to the other, saw Ruusuvuori win more points (139) compared to Giron (131). He also broke the American’s serve five times and got broken just four times in the match, but it was Giron who won the key moments to edge past the Finnish player.

Ruusuvuori struck 49 winners to Giron’s 38, but the American made 10 fewer unforced errors than the Finn’s 47.

The World No. 66 Giron improved to 9-10 overall and 3-2 on grass this year. He had reached the quarterfinals at Halle as a qualifier thus coming to Wimbledon in good form.

Giron had his best-ever Grand Slam showing earlier this month, reaching the third round at Roland Garrros before going down to Christian Garin.

Hurkacz v Giron Prediction and Tip

Hurkacz came in with a dodgy form but a convincing first-round win would have given him a lot of confidence. Expect him to beat Giron and progress to the Round of 32.
