Schwartzman Tested By Broady

World No. 11 Diego Schwartzman of Argentina overcame a first-set deficit to beat Britain’s Liam Broady in the second round of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

The 2020 French Open semifinalist needed three hours and 14 minutes for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 win over the World No. 143.

The Argentine had 16 break point chances in the match and he converted eight of them. His opponent had 18 chances to break Schwartzman’s serve, but the ninth seed saved 15 of them.

Winning a total of 135 points in the match, Schwartzman struck 46 winners to Broady’s 30 and made seven more unforced errors than the Briton’s 33.

The win equalled Schwartzman’s best-ever showing at Wimbledon. He made his only third round appearance at the All England Club in 2019, going down to Matteo Berrettini in five.

A four-time winner on the tour, the 28-year-old Argentine had begun his 2021 Wimbledon campaign with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-0 rout of France’s Benoit Paire on Monday.

Schwartzman improved to 18-11 this season and that includes a title success in Buenos Aires. He also reached the third round at the Australian Open and the quarterfinals at Roland Garros, falling to Aslan Karatsev and Rafael Nadal respectively. On Friday, he will be eyeing a maiden fourth round spot at Wimbledon.

Fucsovics Through After Vesely Retirement

Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics is through to the third round at Wimbledon for the first time in his fourth attempt. The 29-year-old, who was knocked out in the first rounds in 2017 and 2018 and the second round in 2019, moved to the third round after his opponent Jiri Vesely of the Czech Republic retired while trailing the Hungarian 3-6, 4-5 in the second round on Wednesday.

The World No. 48 Fucsovics, who defeated the 19th seed Jannik Sinner in the first round, had already broken his opponent twice and had struck 33 winers in the match when the Czech pulled out with a lower back issue.

On Monday, the Hungarian had lost the first set against Sinner before roaring back in the contest for a 5-7, 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 win in three hours and four minutes.

It’s been a good year for the 29-year-old, who improved to 19-12 thanks to his win over Vesely. The 2018 Geneva champion reached the final in Rotterdam this year and also the quarterfinals in Doha and Dubai.

However, each time he showed promise he was brought down by his nemesis, Andrey Rublev. The Russian beat Fucsovics in the Rotterdam final, Dubai quarterfinal and the second round of the Miami Open. They were also supposed to meet in the Doha quarterfinal, but Fucsovics had to withdraw before the match.

If Fucsovics beats Schwartzman in the third round and if Rublev wins over Fabio Fognini, then the two could once again be meeting in the next round.

Schwartzman v Fucsovics Prediction and Tip

Both players are not known for their game on grass, and will have their eyes on a first Round of 16 spot at Wimbledon. It won’t be a surprise if a fifth set is needed to separate the two.
