Hsieh’s Singles Form Concerning

Sixth seed Su-wei Hsieh comes to Prague having clinched her fourth Grand Slam doubles title and third at Wimbledon on Saturday. Along with partner Elise Mertens, Hsieh saved two Championship points before going on to defeat the Russian pairing of Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina 3-6, 7-5, 9-7.

A solid doubles player, Hsieh has now won 29 doubles titles and has finished runner-up 14 times.

However, when it comes to singles, Hsieh has lost her form ever since reaching her first major quarterfinal at the Australian Open, and she comes to Prague having lost all her main draw matches since her last eight defeat to Naomi Osaka in the first Grand Slam of the year.

Overall, Hsieh is 6-10 this year, having won four matches at the Australian Open and two qualifying rounds at the Madrid Open.

The 35-year-old, who has three singles titles, but none since 2018, had reached a career-high ranking of 23 in 2013. Yet to lose a singles final, Hsieh won the Malaysian Open and the Guangzhou Open in 2012 and the Japanese Open in 2018.

Hsieh’s singles record in 2020 wasn’t great either as she went 1-7 in the main draws, with her only win coming at the French Open.

Gatto-Monticone, a Rank Outsider

Facing Hsieh in the first round will be World No. 173 Giulia Gatto-Monticone of Italy, who has won just one tour-level main draw match this year, and is 13-15 from all tournaments, across levels this year.

The Italian was beaten this week by Spain’s Lara Arruabarrena in the first round of the Swedish Open. Her only main draw win on the tour this year came against Astra Sharma in Bogota, when she rallied from a set down to beat the Australian. The 33-year-old Italian had entered the main draw through the qualifiers, but couldn’t go beyond the Round of 16, falling to Tamara Zidansek.

Her best performance this year was a semifinal finish at an ITF event in Argentina.

Gatto-Monticone, who has a career-high ranking of 148, has won 11 titles and finished runner-up 18 times at the ITF level.
