Kevin Anderson v Illya Marchenko Head to Head
Anderson has won all three of their previous meetings, defeating Marchenko in Los Angeles in 2010, Wimbledon in 2011 and French Open in 2013.
The one at Wimbledon in 2011 was a thrilling five-setter.

Thirteen years after making his first appearance at Newport, Kevin Anderson will return to the tournament as a wildcard.
The 35-year-old South African, who has a 40-28 record on grass, will be hoping to make a deeper run at Newport this year, after his only appearance in 2008 saw him win his first round match against Gilles Muller, but lose in the second round to Spain’s Ivan Navarro.
A finalist at the U.S. Open in 2017 and the Wimbledon in 2018, the 6’8″ Anderson is 5-6 this year and that follows an equally disappointing 10-10 2020 season, when he reached just one semifinal in Vienna.
A six-time winner from 19 finals, Anderson’s last success came in Pune in 2019.
Ranked 102nd in the world, the South African reached the quarterfinals in Estoril this year, but was forced to retire after losing the first set to Marin Cilic. He also won two matches at Melbourne-1, reaching the Ropund of 16 before going down to Karen Khachanov. He was handed first-round defeats at the Australian, Miami and French Opens, but got into the second round at Wimbledon after beating Marcelo Tomas Barrios Vera in four.
His 12th Wimbledon appearance however ended in the second round with a straight sets defeat to Novak Djokovic.

Marchenko Looking for First Win in Newport
Facing Anderson in the first round will be Ukraine’s Ilya Marchenko, who won his eighth Challenger title earlier this year by defeating Andy Murray in the final in BIella.
The 33-year-old Ukrainian, who reached the fourth round of the U.S. Open in 2016, has struggled on the tour over the last four years.
He is 0-1 on the tour this year, having played mostly at the Challenger level. Marchenko won both his qualifiers to make it to the main draw at Queen’s but fell to Feliciano Lopez in the first round in straight sets.
This will be the fourth time that Marchenko will play in Newport and he has lost all three of his previous matches, losing to America’s Michael Russell in 2013, Ivo Karlovic in 2015 and to Bjorn Fratangelo in 2017. All three of those matches had gone the distance.
Anderson v Marchenko Prediction and Tip
Despite Anderson’s recent struggles, he will be the favourite to advance into the next round by keeping his perfect record against the Ukrainian intact.
