Ana Konjuh v Tereza Mrdeza Head to Head

It will be their first match on the tour, however they have met at the lower tier twice, with Konjuh beating Mrdeza on both the occasions. One of them was a quarterfinal at the WTA 125 in Bol in 2016 and the other was the final of an ITF event in Zagreb last year.

Konjuh Will Look to Recapture Early Season Form

Former World No. 20 Ana Konjuh comes to Budapest with a 28-15 record from all tournaments in 2021.

It has been a good year for the former World No. 20, who had a long struggle with injury since 2017. She won her first main draw match in three years, at the Miami Open earlier this year, defeating Katerina Siniakova in the first round. The 23-year-old Croatian kept the momentum going in the next two rounds, beating Madison Keys and Iga Swiatek respectively, before falling to Anastasija Sevastova in the Round of 16.

Having got her winning touch back, the World No. 120 Konjuh continued to impress on the tour, reaching the quarterfinals in Istanbul and the final at the Serbia Open.

A two-time junior Grand Slam singles champion, Konjuh was a qualifier in Belgrade, and defeated Alison Van Uytvanck, Yulia Putintseva, Nadia Podoroska and Maria Camila Osorio Serrano in her first four main draw matches before falling to Paula Badosa in the final. Konjuh trailed the Spaniard 2-6, 0-2 before having to retire from the contest.

Since then Konjuh has done well in the qualifiers, but has struggled to win matches in the main draw.

The Croatian, who began the season as World No. 477 is slowly climbing back the rankings. She featured at the German Open in Hamburg last week, defeating Jasmine Paolini but falling to Sara Errani.

Mrdeza Qualifies for the Main Draw

Facing Konjuh in the first round will be World No. 220 Tereza Mrdeza, who brushed aside her qualifying round opponents over the last two days.

Mrdeza, who reached a career-high ranking of 150 in 2015, defeated Hungary’s Natalia Szabanin 6-4, 6-2 in the first qualifying round on Saturday and then ousted Spain’s Cristina Bucsa 6-4, 7-6 in the second qualifying round on Sunday.

The 30-year-old Croatian is 21-16 from all levels this year. Playing mostly on the ITF Circuit, Mrdeza reached one semifinal and two quarterfinals on the Circuit this year.

Mrdeza is an eight-time ITF champion and has played just one main draw match on the tour this year, falling to Daria Kasatkina in the first round in Istanbul.
