Basilashvili, Two-Time Winner in Hamburg

Basilashvili is attempting to win the title in Hamburg for the third time, having first won the tournament in 2018 when it was known as the German Open, and a year later when it became the European Open.

He has already won two tournaments in 2021, the Qatar Open, and the Bavarian Championships, which were also held on German clay in Munich.

And this despite the fact that he still has domestic abuse charges hanging over his head back in Georgia.

The number three seed was given a bye in the first round and was last in action back at Wimbledon, where he lost his first round match with Andy Murray.

Prior to that he had been a semi-finalist in Halle, before eventually losing to Andrey Rublev.

Baez Surprises Moutet

Baez is currently close to his highest ever world ranking, although he spends the vast majority of his time on the junior tours, where he has won eight singles titles, seven of them in clay court events.

Three of those wins have come in 2021 alone. Baez won two events in Chile, and one in Croatia, and last month, finished runner-up in another tournament in Slovakia.

This a rare foray for him into the main draw of a senior tournament and he got there by winning two matches in qualifying, beating first Rudolf Molleker of Germany, and then Juan Pablo Varillas of Peru.

His reward was a first round tie with Corentin Moutet of France, the world number 89, and it was a match that Baez dominated almost from start to  finish.

After the opening couple of service games were shared, Baez broke Moutet, and then broke him twice more to take the set in 34 minutes.

Again, he achieved an early break in the second, and, although Moutet fought back briefly with a break of his own, it was a temporary stay of execution. Baez broke him again and then once more for good measure to wrap up the match.

Basilashvili v Baez Prediction and Tip

Baez has done well to get this far, but he is playing a man who revels in the playing conditions of Hamburg. It would be a major surprise were Basilashvili to lose.
