Jordan Thompson v Yuichi Sugita Head to Head
The pair have met once before, in the Surbiton Challenger event on grass in 2017, Sugita winning courtesy of two tie-breaks.

Unlike Sugita, Thompson has yet to enjoy tournament success on the senior ATP tour, although he was runner-up on grass in the Rosmalen Championships in 2019, beaten by the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.
And, amongst the 27 finals and 12 title wins on the junior tours, was of his defeats was on grass in Surbiton, four years ago.
Thompson has been in good result form on grass as well, reaching the second round in Stuttgart and Halle and the third round in Mallorca.
At Wimbledon he beat Casper Ruud, and another Japanese man in the form of Kei Nishikori, before losing to Ilya Ivashka of Belarus.
In the first round in Newport, he was leading Cedrik-Marcel Stebe of Germany by a break in the first set, when the world number 139 suffered an injury and had to retire.

Sugita Ends Losing Streak
Currently the fourth ranked Japanese player. Sugita was one ranked in the top 40, and has won one senior ATP title, and that was on grass, the Antalya Open in 2017, when he beat Adrian Mannarino in the final.
These days, most of his time is spent on the Challenger tour, where his best result in 2021 came on the clay of Lugano in Switzerland in March, when he got to the semi-finals.
However, he then lost the next five matches that he played, including a first round defeat to Richard Gasquet of France at Wimbledon.
He snapped that losing sequence though, with a first-round victory in Newport, beating the Austrian Jurij Roidonov, the world number 138, in straight sets.
The first set was dominated by serve, with very few break opportunities until the 12th game, when Sugita brought enough pressure to bear in the Roidonov serve that the Austrian cracked and have the advantage to the man from Japan.
The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second serve, but four games later, Roidonov was broken again. There was no coming back from that for hi, and Sugita was able to close out the match.
Thompson v Sugita Prediction and Tip
Both men are proven grass court players, but Thompson is the man in much the better recent form, and should prove to be too strong for Sugita.
