Pablo Carreno-Busta v Federico Delbonis Head to Head

The pair have met seven times before, and Delbonis leads their head-to-head record by five matches to two. Five of those matches were on clay, and Delbonis won all but one of them, including their most recent encounter at the Madrid Masters earlier this year.

Carreno-Busta Eyeing Second Title of 2021

Carreno-Busta won the Andalucía Open in April and now, with the early defeat of the top seed in Hamburg, Stefanos Tsitsipas, will be entertaining hopes that he can win his sixth senior career title this weekend.

So far, he has yet to drop a set in Germany, having enjoyed a relatively comfortable win over compatriot Carlos Taberner to set-up a quarter-final with Dusan Lajovic of Serbia, the number five seed and world number 43.

The Spaniard began badly, dropping his opening two service games, but then he hit back with two breaks of his own to level things up.

With no further opportunities for either man, that meant a tie-break, and it was Carreno-Busta who proved the more consistent of the pair during the course of it, clinching the set at his first opportunity.

Lajovic had several opportunities to break the Spaniard, particularly in the seventh game, but his failure to take any of them proved to be costly, when he was broken in turn next game. Carreno-Busta was able from there to serve out.

Delbonis Back from the Brink of Defeat

Delbonis, for most of the first part of his quarter-final match with Benoit Paire of France, was on the backfoot.

The world number 51, for once keeping his emotions in check, had taken the first set, and shown bravery on the big points by coming in behind his serve to volley at the net, whilst his backhand remained a powerful weapon.

And, when Paire went a break up in the second set, the writing appeared on the wall for Delbonis. But the Argentine kept himself in the match, broke back, and forced the tie-break.

Four times Paire earned himself match point, and four times they were squandered, with Delbonis refusing  to give up. Delbonis then generated for himself two set points and took the second to take the match into a third set.

The tide seemed to have turned when Paire dropped his serve early in the third set, only for the Frenchman to level again.

However, Delbonis broke him once more and this time it proved to be decisive, as he served out to complete his comeback.

Carreno Busta v Delbonis Prediction and Tip

Delbonis has the better head to record, but Carreno-Busta is the higher ranked and has already won on the tour this year. Added to that, the Argentine may have used up more than his fair share of luck already in his defeat of Paire.
