Alcaraz Making an Impression

He is just 18 and but has been extremely impressive this season and a 10-10 record on the tour has seen him climb 69 places in the rankings from 141 at the start of the year to 72 last week.

Carlos Alcaraz, who won his fourth Challenger title in Oeiras earlier this year, has flourished on clay, his preferred surface, going 6-5 this season, which included runs to the third round of the French Open as a qualifier and a first ATP semifinal in Marbella, where he accounted for Casper Ruud in the quarterfinal.

All five of Alcaraz’s Challenger Tour finals have come on clay and he will look to keep impressing on the surface, where he also defeated higher-ranked players in Feliciano Lopez (Marbella), Adrian Mannarino (Madrid) and Nikoloz Basilashvili (French Open) this year.

Alcaraz won in Oeiras after beating Facundo Bagnis in the final. The Argentine was ranked higher than the Spaniard back then. So it’s the ability to deliver results against big names that has caught the eye this year and it seems it’s only a matter of time when he starts making deeper runs in tournaments on consistent basis.

Pouille Searching for Form

He missed out the entire 2020 season with a right elbow operation, and hasn’t been able to reach the levels that he reached prior to the surgery, seeing his ranking drop out of top 100 for the first time since 2015.

The 2019 Australian Open semifinalist and the 2016 Wimbledon and U.S. Open quarterfinalist, Pouille reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 in 2018, but the five-time tour-level champion has been woefully out of form this season. The Frenchman is 3-9 overall and 2-4 on clay.

Usually an all-surface player, Pouille brings a 36-32 career record on clay to Umag. He has featured in two finals on the surface, winning the title in Hungary in 2017 and finishing runner-up in Romania.

Pouille has not made a final since his fourth career runner-up finish in Dubai in 2018, and the 27-year-old will be desperate to turn things around soon. But to aim that far he will first have to get back to winning ways in the earlier rounds, something he has failed to do consistently this season.

Alcaraz v Pouille Prediction and Tip

Pouille’s form has been worrisome, while Alcaraz has been very good this season. Expect the younger pro to keep impressing with a win on Monday.
