Steve Johnson v Gerardo Lopez Villasenor Head to Head

The pair have met once before, also on hard courts in Mexico, at Acapulco in 2019. Johnson won that match in straight sets.

Four-Time Tour Winner Johnson

Johnson has won four career titles, two on grass and two on clay, and been runner-up in two hard court events, although the last of his finals was three years ago.

He also won a bronze medal in the doubles with Jack Sock at the Rio Olympics, but he has not been selected for the US team this time round for Tokyo.

Johnson chose to sit out the early months of this season, and did not reappear on tour until Acapulco in March, where he lost in the first round.

He then lost his next four matches, before arresting that trend at the French Open, where he made the third round for the fourth time in his career, before losing to the Spaniard, Pablo Carreno-Busta.

Since then, he has been beaten by two Americans in grass court tournaments – by Taylor Fritz in the second round of Wimbledon and, last week, by Denis Kudla in the first round of Newport.

Mexican Wildcard Lopez Villasenor

Lopez Villasenor was making his main tour debut when he was defeated by Johnson in their match two years ago.

And he also lost at the same stage to another America, Marcos Giron, when given another wildcard to the same tournament a year later. At that time, he was at a career high ranking of 505 in the world, but he has since fallen down the standings.

The 26-year old, who has represented Mexico in the Davis Cup, spends most of his time playing on the ITF circuit, with an occasional venture on to the Challenger tour.

His most recent tournament was an event in Weston, Florida, where he got to the quarter-finals, before losing to Ryan Harrison of the USA, the world number 542.

Johnson v Lopez Villasenor Prediction and Tip

On paper this should be a one-sided contest between the experienced American player and the local wildcard whose has no experience of winning on the main tour. It would be a major surprise if Johnson were not to win this match easily.
