Bedene Has a 7-7 Record in Umag

Over the years, Bedene has played some of his best tennis on clay, the only surface where he has a career winning record (62-58) and also a winning record of  7-6 this season.

Yet to win a tour title, the World No. 56 has featured in four finals, two of which have come on clay and two others on hard courts. His dominance on dirt is also highlighted by his accomplishments at the Challenger Tour, where the 31-year-old has won 21 titles, 16 of which were on clay.

Bedene, who won two matches at Wimbledon this year, has had an up-and-down year, which included quarterfinal finishes in Cagliari and Lyon, where he defeated David Goffin in an earlier round.

Can he deliver in Umag?

It’s a surface he knows pretty well as he will be making his eighth main draw appearance in the tournament this year. He has a 7-7 win-loss record from his past seven appearances and has been a quarterfinalist twice, in 2013 and 2019, when he beat Cecchinato in the first round. He will be aiming to go past the quarterfinals this time around.

Can Cecchinato Repeat Parma Exploits?

Marco Cecchinato has always struggled Bedene but he will take confidence from the fact that he beat the Slovenian in their only meeting this year.

Ranked 82nd in the world, the Italian has endued more losses than wins this season, going 13-16 so far, but is 12-11 on clay, the surface on which he has enjoyed the most success in his career.

A surprise semifinalist at the 2018 French Open, Cecchinato has won all three of his ATP titles on clay, and has two runner-up finishes on the surface as well, with the most recent of them coming in Parma this year, where he fell at the last hurdle to Sebastian Korda.

The 28-year-old has never been to a final on another surface and has woeful career records of 8-36 on hard courts and 2-7 on grass. Clay is his forte and a 49-56 career record is a proof of that.

Cecchinato, who made it to the third round at Roland Garros this year, will be hoping to notch a few more wins in Umag, where he won the title in 2018 by beating Guido Pella in the final. He has a 5-3 record in the tournament and this will be his fifth appearance in Umag.

Bedene v Cecchinato Prediction and Tip
