Cristian Garin v Marc Polmans Head to Head

Garin’s won both their previous matches, at the French Open last year and at Wimbledon this year. Interestingly, Polmans took a set on both the occasions, but the Chilean held off the Aussie in four.

Garin Looks to Put Bastad Disappointment Behind

He has produced his best Grand Slam results this year, and also captured an ATP 250 at home, but amid all the successes there have been a few disappointments on the way as well, with the most recent being a quarterfinal defeat in the hands of Federico Coria in Bastad last week.

There have been a few occasions this season where he has been seen as one of the pre-tournament favourites, but made a shock early exit. Sumit Nagal beat him in Buenos Aires in the second round, and Cam Norrie stopped him in the quarterfinals in Estoril, this despite him being a dominant force on clay.

Garin has a 57-29 record on clay, and has won all of his five career titles on the surface. This year, the 25-year-old is 14-8 on his favourite surface, which includes a title in Santiago and a run to the fourth round of the French Open for the first time in his career.

He also performed exceedingly well at Wimbledon, reaching the Round of 16 against expectations, having never gone past the first round before.

So, overall it’s been a year where Garin has not failed to surprise. The World No. 19 is the fourth seed in Gstaad and is seen as a contender for the title. It will be interesting to see if he can live up to the expectations this time.

Polmans Has Task Cut Out Against Garin

Not too experienced on the tour, Australia’s Marc Polmans will have his task cut out against Garin on clay. The 24-year-old looked good against Switzerland’s Sandro Ehrat in the first round but he will have to raise his level a few notches against the much more accomplished Garin in the second round.

Ranked 147th in the world, Polmans defeated the 408th ranked Ehrat 7-5, 6-3 in the first round, but will be well aware that things would only get difficult from here on.

This was the Australian’s first tour-level match on clay this season. He won a Challenger level tournament on the surface in 2018 and has three Futures titles to go along with it, but is 2-2 on clay at the highest level.

Polmans has mostly struggled through the year, falling in the first rounds of most of the tournaments. That said, he did have a decent Wimbledon, coming through the qualifiers and then winning his first round match before going down to Garin.

Garin v Polmans Prediction and Tip

Although Polmans has made things interesting in their previous two meetings, Garin will still be expected to win in straight sets.
