Dodin is ranked more than 250 places ahead of Alexandra Dulgheru but going into the encounter she wasn’t that big a favourite, starting out 4/5 to win it. As it turned out, Dodin did not have too many difficulties getting past Dulgheru, registering a straight-set win.
In a match lasting an hour and 19 minutes, Dodin carved out a 6-3, 6-2 victory to seal her second round place. For a player who hasn’t won too many main draw matches on the WTA circuit this season, it would have come as a huge relief.
In 2021, Dodin had won just two matches before this one and the way she started in this encounter it looked like she was headed towards another underwhelming performance.
Dulgheru broke Dodin in the third game itself but the Frenchwoman followed it up with a break back in the fourth and a decisive one in eighth game to clinch the opening set. And in the second, Dodin raced away to a 3-1 lead, finishing off the encounter soon after.

Diatchenko Resists Grabher Challenge
Once ranked 71st in the world, Diatchenko has fallen to outside the top 140 and that has been down to her lack of tennis over the last couple of seasons.
Diatchenko featured in only 13 matches last year and 11 before the start of this tournament this year across the ITF and WTA circuits. And barely won anything.
Not known for her prowess on clay, Diatchenko’s last win in the main draw of a tournament on clay came in 2015, making it six years since a victory. Which is why she would be darn pleased with her 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Grabher in a match that kept her on court for an hour and 53 minutes.
She lost her serve four times, sure, but broke back five times off the six break-points she got too.
