Petra Kvitova v Alison Van Uytvanck Head to Head

Petra Kvitova and Alison Van Uytvanck have met just once on the opposite ends of a tennis court. Their only meeting till date was on a hard court event at St. Petersburg last year. Though Kvitova laboured to a win in three sets, the match gave enough glimpses into the power and sublime skills that the Belgian packs into her game.

Kvitova Slays Paolini in Opener

A veteran of 28 career WTA Tour titles, including two Grand Slams, Petra Kvitova does know a thing or two about rising to the winner’s podium and lapping up the adulation and applause from the stands.

However, barring the 2016 Rio Games where she cliched the bronze in singles, the Czech star hasn’t had a podium finish at the Olympics.

Into her thirties now, she is still a handful against top rivals in the biggest of events and it is the undying urge for gold at the biggest sporting stage of all that has brought her to the Tokyo Olympics this year.

And getting her campaign off and running in grand style, the current World No. 13 blazed past Jasmine Paolini of Italy in straight sets to set up a second-round showdown with rising Belgian Alison Van Uytvanck.

Not having had the best of runs in Grand Slam tennis this year, Kvitova sent out a warning to her rivals in the manner in which she swept her opponent in the first set.

Though Paolini tried to put up a fight early in the proceedings, the Czech pulled clear after her opponent conceded a break of serve.

With the opening set in her kitty, Kvitova put Paolini on the defensive with some sublime tennis in the second. With no apparent chinks in the veteran’s game for the Italian to exploit, the two-time Grand Slam champion put the outcome beyond any reasonable doubt after breaking Paolini for the second time.

With the match finishing in little more than an hour, the veteran will have enough time to catch her breath and rest her body before squaring off with Van Uytvanck.

Van Uytvank demolishes Jorovic

Following up on the promise that saw her give current World No.9 Elina Svitolina a run for her money at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, rising Belgian star Alison Van Uytvank opened her Olympic campaign with a emphatic takedown of unheralded Serbian Ivana Jorovic in the opening round on Sunday.

Currently ranked 62nd in singles, the Belgian took all of 48 minutes to crush the Serbian in the opening set. Displaying her full range of shots and striking winners at will, Van Uytvank won the first set 6-3, taking a firm grip of the match.

Determined to keep her foot on the pedal, the Belgian opened up a comfortable lead in the second set and it wasn’t long before she closed out a 6-3, 6-2 win.

The emphatic margin of victory would have given the Belgian a world of belief and confidence going into her second-round clash against the two-time Grand Slam champion.

Kvitova v Van Uytvanck Prediction and Tip

While Kvitova eked out a hard-fought win in three sets in their previous meeting last year, the Belgian would have learnt her lessons from the defeat and will take the confidence from an emphatic win in her Olympic opener into the high-stakes second-round clash.

Though the Belgian can’t rival her opponent’s vast experience and superior big-match temperament, she has the game to push Kvitova like she did at St. Petersburg and could even get her own back if she can play the big points better and seize the crunch moments.

While the Czech is likely to hog the bets, it isn’t entirely beyond the Belgian to even the odds and go even with Kvitova on the head-to-head count.
