Jiri Vesely v Ernests Gulbis Head to Head

Vesely has won all three of their previous matches, winning twice in 2015 and once in 2019.

Vesely Lacking Consistency

Jiri Vesely will be playing his fourth tournament in Kitzbuhel. He has a 2-3 record from the past three tournaments and will be hoping for a better showing this time around. But having won just one match in his last two tournaments, things won’t be easy for him in Austria.

Vesely beat Salvatore Caruso in the first round of the Swedish Open, two weeks ago, but lost to Yannick Hanfmann in the second round. A week later in Umag, his challenge ended in the first round with a defeat to Italy’s Alessandro Giannessi.

The 28-year-old, who has been a decent player across surfaces, has a career record of 58-59 on clay and is 3-5 on the surface this year. He is however yet to win a title on the surface, having captured both his previous titles on hard courts.

Ranked 86th in the world, the 6’6″ Czech is 10-12 this year and has won two consecutive matches just once this year at Melbourne-2. He has struggled at the lower level competitions as well.

Gulbis Comes Through the Qualifiers

The last three years have been really tough for former World No. 10 Ernests Gulbis, who is currently ranked 189th in the world, a reflection of his recent struggles.

The Latvian has struggled to go past the qualifiers this season. His only main draw appearance in 2021 ended with a straight sets defeat in the first round in Singapore.

With struggles mounting, Gulbis found a way to get into the main draw by winning both his qualifiers in Kitzbuhel this week. And that will give him a lot of confidence going into the tournament.

The 32-year-old defeated Serbia’s Nikola Milojevic 6-3, 6-4 in the first qualifying round on Saturday and then pipped the promising Carlos Taberner 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 in the second qualifying round to qualify for the main draw.

The 2014 French Open semifinalist is a six-time champion on the tour and has a winning record on both hard and clay surfaces. But his decline in form may soon have a bearing on his record.

Across all clay court events this year, Gulbis has won just four of 12 matches – a real cause of concern.

Vesely v Gulbis Prediction and Tip

Gulbis has seen a constant dip in form, but two solid wins over the last two days would have given him some confidence. However, beating Vesely won’t be easy. Expect the Czech to progress for a second round meeting with either Jaume Munar or Jozef Kovalik.
