Krejcikova Breezes Past Fernandez

French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova didn’t have to spend much time on court in the first round, after her opponent Zarina Diyas retired with an injury while trailing 2-5 in the first set.

The Czech, however, got a full match in the second round on Monday and she put in a near-flawless performance, defeating Canada’s Leylah Fernandez in straight sets. The only blemish was a break she conceded late in the second set but by then she had taken control of the match, having won the first set and broken the 18-year-old twice early in the second.

Krejcikova won 80% first-serve points and 47% receiving points and converted four of 10 break points to wrap-up the one-hour-and-15-minute contest 6-2, 6-4.

Ranked No. 11, the 25-year-old has been in sensational form this year, winning three titles, including the French Open, Strasbourg Open and the Prague Open and finishing runner-up in Dubai.

Bencic Continues Her Dominating Run

After overpowering America’s Jessica Pegula in the first round, ninth seed Belinda Bencic of Switzerland dominated local hope Misaki Doi in the second round on Monday to move into the Round of 16 at the Olympics.

Bencic ran to a 4-1 lead in the first set with two breaks of serves, before Doi got a break back. But the Swiss broke back immediately to restore the two break advantage and then served out the set. In the second, Doi drew first blood, taking a 0-2 lead, but Bencic broke back in the next game and then edged ahead later with another break to win the match 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 24 minutes.

She wasn’t broken once by the American in the first round, beating the American 6-3, 6-3.

The 24-year-old, ranked No. 12 in the world has featured in two finals this year, on grass in Berlin and on hard court in Adelaide, but hasn’t been able to add to her four career WTA titles.
